In the story mode, Sawaguchi first appears in the Midorioho Shops during the first day and attempts to sell a party ticket scam to Kunio. Sawaguchi attempts to persuade Kunio into buying a ticket, but is called by Nishimura and heads off to go meet up with him. An hour later, Sawaguchi appears in the same part of town and attempts to sell party tickets to Kunio again, but takes a second to recognize he's already talked to him before. He asks Kunio if he plans on buying the tickets this time and the player is then given the option to do so. If the player refuses, Sawaguchi will begin to fight Kunio and runs off to tell Nishimura upon being defeated. If the player accepts, Sawaguchi will thank Kunio for buying the tickets and walk off with a smirk on his face. In the evening, Sawaguchi and Nishimura are seen walking together at the Midorioho Shops and run into Kunio, where they challenge him to a fight at the Maruka Transport Warehouse. Inside of the warehouse, Sawaguchi waits for Kunio and has a rematch fight against him, now going all out as he knows he's fighting against Kunio now. Upon being defeated, Sawaguchi will tell Kunio how to reach Nishimura and warns him of his strength, stating that he will not be able to get past him. If the player declines Nishimura's proposal for an alliance to help take down Tadashi Kinoshita the following day, Sawaguchi and some Hakutaka Industrial High School students will assist Nishimura in a second fight.
On the second day, Sawaguchi and Nishimura arrive to the warehouse late when Kunio has already dealt with Kinoshita. The two were hoping to get in on some of the action and expressed their disappointment, though are surprised when Kinoshita gets up for a third time. When Kinoshita shows his zombie face, Nishimura gets scared though Sawaguchi attempts to calm him down by saying that because Kunio is on their side, Kinoshita has no chance of winning. Sawaguchi is then attacked by Kinoshita. Upon defeating Kinoshita and his goons, Sawaguchi appears exhausted and is happy that his school is no longer under Kinoshita's thumb.
During the final day on the true ending, Sawaguchi and Nishimura will show up to Reihō Academy to assist Kunio and Riki in their fight against Kinoshita and later team up with Sanjūrō Sugata and Haruka Nanase the floor below when they hear Kinoshita start to get back up.
In Riki's Story, Sawaguchi confronts Riki for his second button and threatens to take it by force. Before a fight starts, Tsuneo Kamijō arrives demanding for the same thing. Riki asks the two why they want his second button, in which they claim that it'll help make their dreams a reality. Feeling moved, Riki willfully gives up his second button, but points out that only one of them can have it. The player is then given the choice to give the button to Sawaguchi or Kamijō. If the player chooses Sawaguchi, it is revealed that his true intentions was to just sell the button for a profit. Kamijō arrives shortly after and gets into an argument over who should be rightfully given the button, though eventually Riki gets fed up and decides to fight them both. On the final day, Sawaguchi confronts Riki once again on Reihō Academy's campus and is accompanied by Nishimura, this time after his belt. Kamijō and Noriyuki Yamamoto show up immediately after, in which the four begin to fight against Riki.

River City Saga: Three Kingdoms[]
Sawaguchi plays the role of Zhang Bao, one out of three brothers leading the Yellow Turbans.
Zhang Bao is first mentioned in the first chapter by one of Dong Zhuo (Sabu)'s troops who informs Guan Yu (Kunio), Liu Bei (Gōda), and Zhang Fei (Godai) that Zhang Bao has recently been staying at Yang Castle. Missing their chance with Zhang Jiao (Nishimura), the brothers head to the castle to take on Zhang Bao. Upon arriving to the entrance of the castle, Zhang Bao will taunt the players who are unable to enter as a curse has been placed that repels anyone who are not apart of the Yellow Turbans. When playing on the comedy route, the player will enter anyway, though must go through the castle's back entrance on any other route. Upon entering the castle, Zhang Bao will start a fight against the Brothers of the Peach Garden. When playing on the hot-blooded route, Zhang Bao summons Zhang Jiao and Zhang Liang (Nedachi) to assist him in the fight. Upon being defeated, Zhang Bao agrees to disband the Yellow Turbans.
River City Saga: Three Kingdoms Next[]
Sawaguchi plays the role of Zhang Wei, a military commander in the Five Pecks of Rice.
Zhang Wei and his older brother Zhang Lu (Nishimura) are able to be talked to in the second chapter as part of a sidequest. While on the run from Cao Cao (Yamada)'s army, they run into Guan Yu (Kunio) and insist that they are not related to the Yellow Turban leaders Zhang Bao and Zhang Jiao respectively. Guan Yu doesn't believe their claims and points out how they have the same faces as them, though Zhang Lu continues to lie about not being the same person and asks Guan Yu to not make a big fuss about their whereabouts as they are trying to keep a low profile. Zhang Wei insists that they don't have to flee from Cao Cao's army and that they'd be able to take them on if they gave it their all, though Zhang Lu brings up how badly they got beaten during the Yellow Turban Rebellion and how there's no chance of them winning if they're outnumbered.
Guan Yu then becomes certain that the two are indeed Zhang Bao and Zhang Jiao after they had brought up the Yellow Turban Rebellion, though suddenly a Cao Cao troop spots the two and gets ready to capture them. Zhang Wei threatens to take them out in a single punch, though Zhang Lu asks him to back down and leave things to their new recruit Guan Yu. Upon clearing out the enemies, Zhang Lu decides that they should surrender to Cao Cao. Zhang Wei is initially against the idea, though is convinced after Zhang Lu explains they'd be able to gradually convert Cao Cao's army into members of the Five Pecks of Rice if they surrender.
