Huang Gai first appears with Sun Jian during the second chapter where Sun Quan's army is fighting against Dong Zhuo (Sabu)'s troops at the Hulao Pass. Before Guan Yu (Kunio), Liu Bei (Gōda) and Zhang Fei (Godai) join the fight, they introduce themselves to the two. Huang Gai recognizes the brothers as the ones who were responsible for taking down the Yellow Turbans. Huang Gai is later seen in Xingyang feeling ill as he and other members of Sun Quan's army ate the provisions Yuan Shu (Yūji) provided before the battle.
In the final chapter, Huang Gai appears in Chaisang where he'll ask Guan Yu to fight him as part of his plan on infiltrating Cao Cao (Yamada)'s army by pretending to switch sides after supposedly being beaten up in a fight against Sun Quan and Zhou Yu (Kyōko). Once he joins their ranks, he plans on boarding one of the boats when the battle begins and start setting fire to a multitude of them. Guan Yu agrees to fight and upon being defeated by him, Huang Gai thanks him and takes his leave. During the Battle of Red Cliffs, Huang Gai runs into Guan Yu on one of the boats and assists him in fighting against Yu Jin (Taira).

Trivia[]
- During development of Downtown Nekketsu Baseball Monogatari: Yakyū de Shōbu da! Kunio-kun, Hanazono High School was going to be given it's own story with it revolving around Washio and his friendship with Riki.[2]
- The prologue would've seen him being handed an invitation to the Tōdō Group's upcoming tournament by Mami Shimada with him turning it down thinking he had nobody else to play with due to him no longer being on the school's baseball team, though Mami would point behind him where Washio would then see Riki and many other capable players standing around with bats and gloves in their hands ready to play baseball with him. After realizing they intended on playing and weren't getting ready to attack another school, he began to cry.
