Ryūichi (竜一, りゅういち?), full name Ryūichi Hattori (服部竜一, はっとり りゅういち?), is a third year student at Reihō Academy. His father is the chairman of the board at Hattori Academy where he previously attended. With his younger twin brother Ryūji, they form the Double Dragon brothers and have been able to take on leaders of other schools using never-before-seen fighting techniques.

Appearances[]

Downtown Nekketsu Story[]

Ryūichi debuts in Downtown Nekketsu Story alongside Ryūji as the faces for Yamada's scheme. Months prior to the events of the main story, the twins transfer to Reihō Academy and would eventually begin to start dominating the other high schools in the area. Under Yamada's orders, the two get Riki involved by kidnapping his girlfriend Mami and sends out an invitation challenging him.

In the main story, Ryūichi and Ryūji are first mentioned by Hasebe as she informs Kunio and Riki that the twins were responsible for kidnapping Mami and that they're keeping her captive on the top floor of Reihō Academy. She warns the two that the twins are powerful and that they'll need to be prepared before taking them on. The twins are later mentioned by Onizuka as he tells Kunio and Riki that they're currently on the top floor of the school after he is defeated. After defeating Godai, he will mention the twins as being even stronger than him. Upon confronting the twins, they will briefly introduce themselves before they begin to fight. Once defeated, the twins will compliment Kunio and Riki's strength before telling them that who they're looking for is on the rooftop.

If Tatsuichi is spared, he will flee the scene and later come back as an ally if the player's CPU partner dies during a fight.

This remake of Super-Awesome Field Day re-imagines the events of that game. The story takes place after River City: Rival Showdown.

In the story mode, Ryūichi and Ryūji appear as subordinates to Tōdō. When the new freshman and Hiroshi are walking together on the way to see Kunio at the hospital, the two run into Tōdō with the twins standing behind him. The twins and some Reihō Academy students fight the player while Nanase, Sugata, and eventually Kunio join the battle. When the cops are called, the twins alongside the other Reihō students leave the scene. Later in the day when Nanase is admitting guilt to poisoning Kunio, the twins overhear him being threatened and apologize for what's happened. The twins later question Tōdō before the final match about his actions, to where they request a fair match for the finals. Upon losing the tournament, the twins admit defeat and refuse to help Tōdō who has an angry group of Reihō students surrounding him.

Ryūichi acts as the captain of Reihō Academy's team and can be played outside of the story mode. Ryūichi is able to use the Burst Dragon Kick and Dragon Tail Kick as his special moves.

Downtown Nekketsu Jidaigeki[]

River City: Rival Showdown[]

River City: Rival Showdown is a remake of Downtown Nekketsu Story. The game takes place before River City Super Sports Challenge ~All Stars Special~.

Three months prior to the main story, Ryūichi and Ryūji are first seen being approached by Yamada, who's looking to fight them as a way to recruit someone strong to serve as his subordinate. Upon being defeated, the twins willingly accept serving under Yamada and soon transfer to Reihō Academy.

In the main story, the twins ambush Kunio on the campus of Nekketsu High School late at night and leave the area once the cops are called or are successfully defeated within the time limit. On the third day after Gōda and Godai are successfully defeated by Kunio on Reihō Academy's campus, Yamada who was watching afar commands the twins to recapture Mami at Starpark Café as a way to get Riki out of the picture. The twins are later seen on the final day guarding Mami on the top floor of Reihō Academy, to where they then fight Kunio and Riki. Upon being defeated, the two attempt to deny Kunio's claims of serving under Yamada, though eventually confess and reveal Yamada's location.

Xiahou Dun is first seen in chapter four where Guan Yu (Kunio) is able to spar with him in Xu's barracks. During the end of the chapter, Xiahou Dun and Xiahou Yuan (Ryūji) wait for Guan Yu at Liyang for escaping Xu without permission and bruteforcing his way through the Cao Cao army's checkpoints. The two fight Guan Yu until Zhang Liao (Hasebe) breaks up the fight with a sign of passage from Cao Cao. During the fifth chapter, Xiahou Dun is seen leading Cao Cao's troops in Bowang and fights against Guan Yu, Zhang Fei (Godai), and Zhuge Liang (Misako). In the final chapter, Xiahou Dun and Xiahou Yuan will fight in place of Zhang Liao if the player is on-track for the Romance route or does not answer Zhang Liao's question to Guan Yu if he truly wishes to fight Cao Cao.

In the China Heroes gamemode, Ryūichi is able to be unlocked by completing the Extra Hard difficulty in the story mode. Ryūichi is able to use the Whirlwind Kick and Dragon Kick as his specials while using the Meteorite Special with enemies nearby and the Dragon Tail Kick with no nearby enemies as his super specials.

Localized version[]

  • In River City Ransom, Ryūichi was renamed to Randy and remains as one of Cyndi's kidnappers. This name is retained in River City Ransom: Tokyo Rumble and River City: Rival Showdown.

Trivia[]

  • In previous games, Ryūichi was loosely based on Billy Lee, one of the main protagonists of the Double Dragon series, which in turn was directly derived from the Kunio-kun series. The iconic "Double Dragon" theme often plays whenever he and his twin brother Ryūji appear. After the release of Double Dragon IV, however, Ryūichi was instead based on Jimmy Lee. Nevertheless, in Stay Cool, Kobayashi-san!: A River City Ransom Story, Ryūichi was once again inspired in Billy Lee. This is intentional, as Hiroyuki Sekimoto was the game's director (Billy has brown hair in all of the Double Dragon games directed by Sekimoto), but in the game he is described as having a composed personality (which fits with Billy in Rival Showdown, but is a contrast to Billy's personality in Double Dragon Advance and Double Dragon IV).
  • In River City: Tokyo Rumble and River City: Rival Showdown, Ryūichi retains the name "Randy" from River City Ransom. However, games released by H2 Interactive (~All Stars Special~ and Battle Royal Special) use his original Japanese name. Stay Cool, Kobayashi-san! also uses his original name.
