Appearances[]
River City: Rival Showdown[]
When playing on the alternate ending of the main story, Kunio and Hiroshi will mention Marian while talking about an unlockable character in Double Dragon Duel.
River City Girls[]
Marian appears as a clerk at Swaggage in Downtown.
River City Girls 2[]
Marian appears as an unlockable character. She is voiced by Erika Harlacher in English and Marina Inoue in the Japanese dub.
Before the events of the story, Marian was out on a mission in the forests of Flatirons chasing after some supernatural crimes, though would begin to feel woozy and would pass out before she was able to figure out what was going on. She then had her mind erased and was brainwashed into working for the Sanwakai by Blaire, who was acting under orders at the time.
Marian is first indirectly mentioned by Hikaru Saotome where he suggests to the protagonists that if they find the mysterious woman with legendary abs, she may be willing to help them clear out the yakuza in Downtown. When the group ask where she's usually seen in the area, Saotome mentions that she's typically seen clearing out the yakuza at the basketball court shortly after they show up. While bantering with each other, the protagonists will ask who Saotome was referring to, though call back to meeting Marian at Swaggage in their previous adventure and begin to start gushing over her physique, though stop themselves and suspect that Saotome was talking about her. Later when the area's generators are all fixed, Saotome will mention to the protagonists that he's seen Marian leading a group of Sanwakai members into the subway. Upon seeing Marian in the subway, the group immediately comment they were right in thinking it was her and briefly gush about her abs once again. With Marian being unable to recognize the protagonists, they attempt to tell her that they were frequent customers to no avail. The group deducts that she seems less friendly than they remembered and asked why she has a crew of yakuza with her, though is immediately told by one of the Sanwakai goons to stop confusing their boss. Marian asks the Sanwakai goons to step aside so she can take care of the protagonists and threatens to kill them.
Upon being defeated, the spell placed on Marian is broken. The Sanwakai goons flee the area and Marian introduces herself to the group, informing them that she was under a spell. The group apologize for hurting her, though Marian shrugs it off as she believes it's what caused the spell to ware off. When asked what she remembered, Marian begins to talk about coming to River City a few years prior with Billy and Jimmy Lee and mentions that while the two were going on crazy adventures, she'd often be left waiting for them to rescue her. She describes how she got sick of being kidnapped and waiting around to be rescued and how she'd eventually decide to rescue herself for a change. Marian mentions that Billy and Jimmy would eventually setup their own dojos because of the fact she wasn't being kidnapped anymore and then talks about her latest adventure that lead her to being brainwashed. Marian then vows to get back into Flatirons and beat up whoever took control of her. The protagonists ask her to join their crew and help them save the city from the Sanwakai, though Marian teasingly asks if they'll be able to keep up with her and agrees to join them. From this point, Marian joins the group as a playable character.
Inside of the graveyard in Flatirons, the protagonists will come across Skullmageddon and mention to him that they're trying to figure out who placed Marian under a spell, to which he immediately starts getting anxious and pretends that he's unaware of who she is. With the group pointing out their suspicions that he's hiding something, Skullmageddon immediately confesses because he recognizes them as loyal customers. He mentions his previous run-in with the Lee brothers back when he was still a supervillain and how he kidnapped Marian to get their attention, though comments that he was taught a hard lesson when he got punched in the gut by her. The protagonists ask if he placed a spell on her, though Skullmageddon assures that he never would in the modern day and only might've back then if he thought of it.
Trivia[]
- Marian's extremely defined abdominal muscles in her River City appearances are a reference to her kidnapping sequence in the original Double Dragon and its various ports and remakes. In that sequence, Marian is knocked unconscious by a single punch to the stomach by one of the common Williams-type enemies and is subsequently carried off. Marian began training to overcome this weakness.
- This kidnapping scene was also humorously referenced at the end of River City Ransom: Underground, wherein Kim takes Abobo on a date by punching him in the stomach and carrying him off.
- WayForward has stated that making Marian playable was one of their earliest goals for River City Girls 2, as players reacted very well to her design in the first game.
- In River City Girls 2, Marian will not recognize Skullmageddon despite the ending of Double Dragon Neon being mentioned by him, in which Marian punches a falling Skullmageddon in the gut.
- Marian's "Liger Drop" attack in River City Girls 2 is named after the iconic "Tiger Drop" move most often used by Kazuma Kiryu in the Like a Dragon series.[1]
