In the story mode, Morimoto is first seen having second thoughts about trying out for Nekketsu High School's team as he isn't sure if he'll be of any use. The new freshman walks in to ask Morimoto if he's trying out, to which he replies that he will despite not being confident that he'll pass. Noboru Takamine introduces himself to the two and warns them that he won't be going easy on them which worries Morimoto. He thanks Takamine and wishes him good luck regardless before leaving to the screening with him and the new freshman. After the unexpected practice match against Reihō Academy, Morimoto is seen with the rest of his team completely worn out and tired.
Morimoto is later seen with his team at Nekketsu's booth before the first match waiting for Kunio to arrive, though he starts to go into a panic once the tournament's rules are changed by Mamoru Tōdō stating that the team's captain must be present in order to continue participating thinking that they won't be able to find one in the next five minutes. Satomi Momozono suggests picking someone on the team as the captain, to which Morimoto initially appears doubtful that it can be someone else besides Kunio. Morimoto then agrees on Haruka Nanase's suggestion of selecting the new freshman as their new captain. After the first match, Morimoto starts to feel doubtful that they'll be able to win the second match with both Kunio and Sanjūrō Sugata being absent and hopes that no more of his teammates will go missing. The new freshman comments that he's heard Sugata isn't in a terrible condition though is unsure how Kunio is doing. Morimoto asks the new freshman to be careful on his way home. Before the second match starts, Hiroshi comes to warn the team that Tsuyoshi Gōda's team is participating in the next match, to which Morimoto recognizes that because Gōda's followers are also participating, Nekketsu is bound to be at a disadvantage.
