In the story mode, Nanase is first seen with Sugata, Kunio, and Satomi Momozono for the results of Nekketsu High School's screening for the tournament. Shortly after, Nanase is seen walking in the park where he is then stopped by Koshiba and Nito. The two demand that Nanase doesn't let Kunio participate in the tournament, where he then refuses their demands and begins to walk away. Koshiba brings up Nanase's friend Matsuda and begin to threaten that something may happen to him if Nanase doesn't comply. Striking a nerve, Nanase decides to listen to what the two have to say instead of continuing to walk away. Koshiba and Nito arrange another meeting at the park for after the first round of the qualifiers.
During the ending of the first round in the qualifiers, Momozono comes to congratulate Sugata and Nanase on their victory, though Sugata notices a bomb thrown her way and knocks Momozono out of the way to prevent her from being harmed. Hit by the explosion, Sugata falls to the ground and Nanase goes to check on him. Later in the day, Nanase is seen back at the park meeting with Koshiba and Nito, where they hand him a poisoned drink and tell him to make sure Kunio drinks it. Nanase reluctantly complies as Matsuda may be harmed if he doesn't, though stops to ask if the bomb that injured Sugata was their doing. Koshiba and Nito lie by denying they have any knowledge of the bomb and proceed to leave the park. At the end of the second round of the preliminaries, Kunio is seen celebrating their victory with his team until Nanase disguised as a girl walks in to hand Kunio the poisoned drink as a gift.
In the first main round of the tournament, Nanase is seen feeling guilty for what he's done when the team is discussing Kunio's absence. As an attempt to eliminate Nekketsu High School, Mamoru Tōdō makes a sudden change to the tournament rules where captains must participate in the match and that any teams without a captain will be disqualified. With the team in a panic, Nanase suggests the new freshman to be appointed as the team's new captain.
While the new freshman and Hiroshi are walking through the park to visit Kunio in the hospital, the two are interrupted by Tōdō, where he orders Ryūichi and Ryūji Hattori to attack the two. Nanase comes in to stop the Dragon Twins from hurting the new freshman, where he helps fight them and some Reihō Academy students. With the twins and the Reihō students leaving after the fight, Kunio thanks Nanase for helping though feels like he doesn't deserve to be complimented. Sugata asks Nanase about what's going on, to where he confesses to the group that he was the one who poisoned Kunio and his reasons for doing so. Sugata is angry with the fact Nanase was being threatened while the Dragon Twins also overhear the conversation and offer to protect Matsuda, as they weren't aware he was being used as leverage against Nanase. In the end, Kunio forgives Nanase for what happened while asking him to cheer up, as they've got a tournament to win.
During the ending of the game, Nanase still appears bothered by what happened thinking that Sugata is angry with him, though Sugata reassures to him that he doesn't care and that under his circumstances it was the only thing he was able to do.
Nanase appears as a member of Nekketsu High School's team and is able to be played in or outside of the story mode. Nanase is able to use the Double Chop and Sliding.

River City: Rival Showdown[]
River City: Rival Showdown is a remake of Downtown Nekketsu Story. The game takes place before River City Super Sports Challenge ~All Stars Special~.
In the main story, Nanase can be talked to in down during parts of the day where he worries about Sugata and how he may have gone off to pick fights with the top delinquents of other schools. On the true ending, Nanase and Sugata will show up to Reihō Academy and assist Kunio and Riki in their fight against Kiyofumi Taira, as they feel like he should've told them he was heading down to the school. Upon defeating Taira, Nanase suggests to Sugata that the two defend the floor they're currently on as he believes if they advance with Kunio that it'll prevent more of an opportunity for him to get trapped by people coming from below. When Kunio is later seen leaving the school, Sugata and Nanase tell him that they've successfully defended the area from any Reihō students.
In Riki's story, Nanase is seen walking on the street with Sugata after they've gotten themselves some yakisoba rolls. Riki runs in and asks the two to hand him a yakisoba roll which shocks the two and prompts Nanase to ask if he's hungry. Riki claims that he needs the roll for something else and once again demands the two that they hand him one. Nanase informs Riki that they've already ate them all which enrages him and prompts him to start a fight claiming Mami Shimada's life depended on that roll. With the two being defeated, Nanase is confused at how some yakisoba rolls have any relation to Mami.
