Custom Character is a recurring feature first included in Nekketsu Fighting Legend. This feature allows the creation of a custom character whether they're integrated into the game's plot or are purely cosmetic.

Nekketsu Fighting Legend[]
When starting a game, the player is asked to fill in a name, birthday, and blood type. Upon filling in the information, a character is generated based on the information given with a determined fighting style, appearance, statistics, and special moves. Playing on the battle mode will grant the option to choose between creating a custom character or selecting from a list of pre-made characters. Pre-made characters can be selected in the story mode by entering their password.
In the story mode, the player accepts an invitation to a martial arts tournament from Toraichi and Toraji. When playing alone, the player will select a pre-made character to be partnered with. Before the finale, the player is seen excited and confident about winning the tournament, though is shocked when seeing Toraichi and Toraji's entrance. With the brothers underwhelmed at the sight of their final opponents, the player demands that they stop underestimating them and starts the fight. During the ending of the game, the player is seen walking away with their partner until they're stopped by Toraichi. The player assumes they want a rematch, though they instead admit defeat and compliments their strength before expressing their hopes in having another fight. After leaving, the player then expresses how fun the tournament was and asks their partner if they're ready to head home. The player is then seen running throughout the credits.

When renaming a character to "XTRA1" or by going to the hidden shop, the player is given a "Custom Self" item. Upon using the item, a customization menu opens where the player is able to change their face, hair, skin tone, eye color, and uniform color.

The player is able to create a custom team for use in Tournament Mode and Free Battle where each player can use parts and special moves obtained through playing the Challenge mode. Characters are able to have their hair, face, hair color, skin tone, statistics, and special moves changed while the team as a whole can have their uniform and it's color changed.
River City Super Sports Challenge ~All Stars Special~[]
This remake of Downtown Nekketsu March Super-Awesome Field Day re-imagines the events of that game. The story takes place after River City: Rival Showdown.
The player is able to create custom characters in the Create menu or will be asked to create one when starting a playthrough of the story. Players are able to change their hair, face, uniform, hair color, skin tone, uniform color, statistics, and special moves changed. When playing in the story mode, the player will appear as a freshman on Nekketsu High School's team and will be able to unlock more special moves and customization parts as they progress through the story.
In the story mode, the player first appears during the opening cutscene where he will find Morimoto worried and ask him what he's concerned about. Morimoto is shocked to see him and will ask the player if he's planning trying out for Nekketsu's team. The player confirms that they're going stating that they've gotten tired of regular school life and will ask Morimoto if he's also planning on trying out. The player is then introduced to Takamine before the three of them leave to the screening. Later at practice, the player is seen training with Ichijō and Sugata until Kobayashi, Onizuka and Reika arrive for a practice match against the school. With Momozono mistakenly scheduling the wrong date, the player states that they have no choice but to take them on. After the unexpected match against Reihō Academy, the new player is seen tired but isn't completely worn out like their teammates.
Before the second round of the qualifiers, Momozono asks Ichijō to fill in for Sugata due to him being injured the day prior, though he appears reluctant. The player believes that he's going to think of a way to sneak away and go home, so they call him out on it before he's able to act. During the ending of the qualifiers, the player is seen celebrating their victory with the team.
The player is later seen with his team at the school's booth before the first match and asks where Kunio is. When the tournament rules are suddenly changed by Tōdō to now require a team captain to be present in order to continue participating, Momozono in a panic suggests picking out a new captain. The team eventually agree upon the player being the best pick and select them as the new captain. With another change made in the rules not allowing teammates to be changed until one is eliminated, the player remains hopeful and believes that they'll be able to win before Kunio gets back. After the match, Morimoto starts to feel doubtful that they'll be able to win the second match without Kunio and Sugata, though the player informs him that Sugata isn't in a terrible condition and that they're currently unsure on how Kunio is doing. Morimoto asks the player to be careful on the way home, though they shrug it off. Before the second match, the player listens to Hiroshi as he informs them that on-top of the School Union lead by Gōda, they'll also be facing off against his loyal followers. Although the team appears doubtful, the player believes that they must push through regardless of the circumstances. After the team's victory in the second round, the player is seen with Hiroshi where he congratulates them on their accomplishments. Gōda comes in with Godai to apologize to them on behalf of his followers for getting carried away. The player then punches Gōda in the face which angers Godai, though Gōda stops him from attacking back. Outside, Hiroshi mentions that he was thinking of visiting Kunio in the hospital on the following day, to which the player states that he'd like to go as well. When Hiroshi mentions Gōda's followers as being avid, the player states that his personality stood out during the match before Hiroshi then mentions his suspicions of Tōdō. The player confirms his own suspicions but doesn't choose to dwell on the topic and decides to head home.
On the following day, the player is seen walking through the park with Hiroshi until they're stopped by Tōdō. He has Ryūichi and Ryūji attempt to attack the two, to which the player asks Hiroshi to run. Before the twins can land an attack, Nanase intervenes and assists the player in their battle against the twins and other Reihō students. Throughout the battle, a recovered Sugata and Kunio eventually join the fight.
After the semi-finals, the player is seen with Kunio and Sugata and comments that Reihō hard to handle as they expected. Kunio compliments the player and states that they've gotten stronger, though the player attests that the whole team has gotten better. During the ending of the game, the player is seen walking home with Kunio and Hiroshi and reflects on the competition as being chaotic. Kunio states that he has high expectations of the player, to which they state that they'll continue working hard. During the secret match, the player is seen with Kunio, Morimoto, and Hiroshi as they receive a letter from Tobioka challenging them against his team. With all the other teams involved being named, the player believes that regardless of how strong they are, their own team will be victorious. Kunio agrees with the player and decides to accept the challenge.
Stay Cool, Kobayashi-san!: A River City Ransom Story[]
When starting a new game, the player is asked to enter the name, gender, relationship, and a selection of items associated with them. The character entered is the friend of Kobayashi that he is looking to save.
Kobayashi's friend is first seen during the finale next to Hirukesu captured and unconscious. Upon defeating Hirukesu, Kobayashi reunites with his friend.
