Artie, full name Arthur "Artie" Van Smythe, is the localized replacement of Ryūichi Hattori appearing in the North American version of Surprise! Nekketsu New Records! The Distant Gold Medal. In this continuity, Artie is the son of Spring Hill's mayor. He shows a clear distaste towards Washington High School and Thornley Industries, though he puts aside his rivalry with the other Hillers when the Southsiders are involved, as he strongly hates all of them. He hates Noise in particular due to the fact he insultingly called him "Artie Choke" after he missed two free-throws in the final seconds of a basketball championship.

Artie debuted in the localization of Surprise! Nekketsu New Records! The Distant Gold Medal as the replacement for Ryūichi. He is the captain of Lincoln High School's team.
