Are there any moments where Reika has a crush on Godã?
Q1 was... Who is Murasaki Kojiro's rival? The answer was Tsuge Raiji!
Q2 was... Which of these characters made their debut in a spinoff title? The answer was Matsudo Kyosuke! Since Bikkuri takes place in universe and is a sequel to Downtown Nekketsu Koushinkyoku, Bikkuri isn't a spinoff (There will be a revised post soon explaining the Technos timeline). Jidaigeki has no relation to the main series plot and is a AU spinoff series (there is a three-year time skip from Kunio kun no Jidaigeki to (it's direct sequel) Downtown Nekketsu Jidaigeki), but the characters from the main series do play the roles of the characters in Jidaigeki (however, that doesn't mean that Kunimasa is Kunio. The same applies to the rest of the Jidaigeki cast) and it is presented as a stage show, apart from that (and the game design) Jidaigeki has no real major relation to the main series (hence why I use terms like "in universe" and "AU (Alt Universe) spinoff").
Q3 was... In Shodai Nekketsu Kouha Kunio kun, the last special move you can learn (remember) is? The answer was German Suplex, which you learn at level 32!
Lastly, Q4 was... The first live-action Kunio was played by? The answer was Sonoda Kazuyuki! Sonoda was a programmer at Technos Japan and he played Kunio in a 1987 Walkthrough videotape during the live-action segments at the beginning and end of the video. Sonoda's name is also used for a character in the series; a student from Houryou High School who has high willpower (Ki Ryoku 気力) and his speciality is the jumping back kick. He is paired with fellow Houryou students, Yoshida (and Ura in DNM EX).

I was actually thinking of doing something similar on here via the poll system.
Don't take some of the AI's answers too seriously, even though it was pretty funny seeing that RCG Misako doesn't know what Soccer is.
After the quiz, I had an Out Of Character (OOC) chat with RCG Misako about the Nekketsu Kouha Kunio kun series. The AI had some really good questions to ask and a really good response to one of my answers.
Anyway, I am sharing this because I thought that it would be fun and I also get to share an update for the timeline and lore explanation posts (which are coming soon don't worry!). So... I can finally start to explain the lore of Nekketsu Kouha Kunio kun all the way up to Bangai Rantou Hen because for one thing I've figured out some major revelations and I finally have the book by Miracle Kids! featuring all the necessary stuff for me to talk about Nekketsu Monogatari properly (and that gets wild, very wild!). Also, I made some slight changes to the timeline and I'll post that later.
Right, I'm off to finish up recording some near-frame-perfect combos in Daikanshasai and a frame perfect trick in MD Soccer Hen. So, I'll see you guys around!
(Edited by Kunio1920 kun)
Technos through to Million/ Miracle Kids! era rules:
Since the arcade titles are retconned because of the console cannon, certain rules and settings can't be seen/ used. Also, if it's a game that takes place during the Technos era (like Kobayashi-san or Downtown Nekketsu Jidaigeki) but was released and developed during the Arc Sys era, it still counts. This also applies to games in the Million/ Miracle Kids! era (the Chou Nekketsu titles, despite being published by Arc Sys, is still very Million) I will also be giving myself (only) three retcon points for any inconsistencies that pop up (spoiler, not many). So without further ado, let's start!
First of all, we have to start with Nekketsu Kouha Kunio kun, it's practically the catalyst for all the events that follow. Then it's Nekketsu Kou Kou Dodgeball Bu, Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari (also includes the extra lore from EX, as EX is an EXpanded version of the original story), (Ikasuze) Stay cool Kobayashi-san, Nekketsu Kou Kou Dodgeball Bu Soccer Hen, Nekketsu Koushinkyoku, Bangai Rantou Hen, Ike Ike Nekketsu Hockey Bu, Nekketsu Kou Kou Dodgeball Bu Kyouteki Toukyuu Senshi no Maki, Shodai Nekketsu Kouha Kunio kun, Bikkuri Nekketsu Shin Kiroku, Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu, Kunio kun no Nekketsu Soccer League, Shin Nekketsu Kouha Kunio tachi no Banka (our first retcon is here (it's only a small one and if you read the trivia post, then it does make sense) because Kunio is in his second year when actually he would be in his third year at this point), Nekketsu Street Basket, Downtown Nekketsu Baseball Monogatari, Kunio kun no Dodgeball Dayo Zen'in Shuugou, Kunio no Oden, Nekketsu Beach Volley, Kunio no Nekketsu Toukyuu Densetsu (I'll explain why it's here in another post or blog. Don't worry also I guess this is another retcon point being used as Shinji's gang will go from Yokohama Funky to Blue Emperor), Chou Nekketsu Kou Kou Kunio kun Dodgeball Bu, Kunio kun no Chou Nekketsu! Daiundoukai, Kunio kun no Chou Nekketsu Soccer League.
Here's the Jidaigeki timeline for completion's sake: Kunio kun no Jidaigeki Dayo Zen'in Shuugou, Downtown Nekketsu Jidaigeki (it does say that it is a sequel to the original Jidaigeki on the back of its box)
Arc Sys timeline (not really quite as many rules, but I won't be including Mahou Monogatari for the same reasons as Jidaigeki)
Firstly we start with Riki Densetsu, as Riki Den takes place before, Nekketsu Kouha Kunio kun Special, Rantou Kyousou Kyoku (Tokyo Rumble), Nekketsu Monogatari SP, Nekketsu Koushinkyoku AS, Battle Royale Special/ Mach
Here are the games during the Arc Sys timeline that don't fit due to them being AU spin-offs or not fitting in due to the ambiguity of the story: Kunio kun no Sangokushi, Nekketsu Mahou Monogatari, Kunio no Nekketsu Street (it's sort of a prequel to Koushinkyoku AS, but the game could take place at any point in the timeline as it is just Kunio, Riki, Gouda and Ryuichi cleaning up the streets) and Nekketsu Taisen Kunio kun X/ TD.
Here are the games that couldn't fit into the Technos through to Million/ Miracle Kids! era: Kunio kun no Daikanshasai (the game takes place after Baseball Monogatari but with every other game happening before the events of Baseball Monogatari (plus the game doesn't have a timeline of events laid out and it no longer official so it's canonicity is definitely non-canon), Downtown Nekketsu Dodgeball (This game is simply a masterpiece, but I'm here to talk lore, and it too is also not clear as to where it is in the timeline. But then again, it was just Miracle Kids! having one ball and a great time with the series entirely), Kunio kun no Nekketsu Dodgeball All Stars (it too is an all-star series celebration game so therefore the lore takes a backseat for some fun. Although it does adapt several stories throughout the Kunio kun series, just in the form of Dodgeball) and Nekketsu Kou Kou Soccer Bu World Cup Hen (Wasn't too sure where to place it, it is the sequel to Soccer Hen... But so is Soccer League, then again one is a world cup and the other is a league tournament... to win a world cup).
Let me explain how I came to this conclusion(we will get into the nitty gritty in later posts) because Famicom Nekketsu Kouha got rid of every character's year of birth (each character's YOB was in the arcade version) (the Sound Story tape does use them, but then it goes by the Famicom's settings such as stating that Kumiko is a first year at Taiyo, so it contradicts one another because she's 18. Still though, that tape has got a lot of awesome info on it) the series starts just a few days or a week after Riki's birthday (he's 19 remember). After Nekketsu Kouha's events, Dodgeball Bu happens (which takes two and a bit weeks you know, for the All Japan High Schools Dodgeball tournament (which we don't see, we do see the final which is Nekketsu v Hanazono) and the 47th World Dodgeball Tournament), once Kunio and the Dodgeball club return from their victory over America two and a bit months pass (all the prior events and the fact that it is said that Nekketsu Monogatari takes place three months after Nekketsu Kouha in it's manual has led me to feel that Nekketsu Kouha and Dodgeball Bu were within that time span. and so while it has been three months since Nekketsu Kouha, that doesn't mean that Dodgeball Bu is exempt. it is a part of that time frame), within those months Kunio becomes a third year at Nekketsu (still 17 though) and Riki meets up with a girl called Mami Shimada (this is just an overview, once I get to the posts there will be a lot more) who sees through Riki's tough exterior and sees this man who has good morals that is just a bit insecure and lets his ego and desires get to him. Mami is the first person to make Riki stop and think about his priorities (if Kunio was the first person to make him question his ability among a few other things then Mami is the person to finally make Riki change it's not instant, it will take time but...) and through being with Mami he starts to care about someone else other than himself and to have a different outlook on certain things. Riki maybe still an incredibly violent man but he now is a slightly less violent man, it's just that it will take something very drastic for Riki to go back to his roots...
Alright, enough of the sudo storytelling to get my point across, but I managed to get all this just by following the game's stories, reading the character's dialogue and getting any extra info from the instruction manuals or other official sources of information. No headcanons or major retcons to try and get an outcome that I would prefer not even using fan works, I just have to follow the lore and I like that.
I'll see you guys at the beginning of the timeline... Nekketsu Kouha Kunio kun, where I'll be looking into each character's reasons for why they would work with Sabu and the impact it has on the series as a whole.
Bye!

Did you know...
That Ryuichi and Ryuji's hair colours in Kunio kun no Chou Nekketsu! Daiundoukai is a reference to Double Dragon on the Sega Master System. In DD for the SMS, Billy (whom Ryuichi is loosely based on) has red hair (it's supposed to be brown, kinda like what the FC/NES version did) and Jimmy (whom Ryuji is loosely based on) has blue hair. Chou Nekketsu Daiundoukai was Arc System Works's second time being involved with a Technos IP (Chou Nekketsu Kou Kou Kunio kun Dodgeball Bu doesn't count as that game was mostly developed by a contract developer, Daiundoukai on the other hand, was more hands-on even though it still had former Technos staff working on the project). The first one being, Double Dragon for the SMS, which Sega had contracted them to develop. This port however had a bad reputation within Technos Japan.
Also, in Chou Nekketsu Daiundoukai, Jimmy's hair colour and design are a reference to Jimmy Lewis from Rage of the Dragons. However, the developers have yet to confirm this bit of trivia (so take this one with a pinch of salt).
Sticking with Chou Nekketsu Daiundoukai, the game's in-game character models closely follow the Technos artwork or the character's sprites rather than following the artwork from the game, in fact, some even follow the Million/ Miracle Kids! art. Godai and Nishimura are some of the few exceptions, however.
If you thought that was it for the second entry in the Chou Nekketsu series, then your wrong! The song titled "Hard and Harder" or new song 3 (it could be 2 or 4 it's been a while since I've checked that) is actually from a SNES game Kazuo Sawa composed, the game being World League Soccer a port of one of the games in the Kick Off series (It's game music 2 btw have a listen! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50-9xUCT_Co)
Here's the Chou Nekketsu version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZ36yYZ6ZV8
It's perhaps the only instance of a non-Kunio kun/non-Technos song to appear in a Kunio kun game (Special thanks go out to Kunio Ryu/Nekketsu High BC for pointing that piece of trivia out).
In Kunio kun no Chou Nekketsu Soccer League Plus, all of the members of Nekketsu FC are modelled after their designs/ artwork from Kunio kun no Nekketsu Soccer League, in fact, if you get the trophies of the characters (after meeting certain conditions), the poses that they are in are the exact same poses as the artwork from Soccer League Famicom.
Stanislav's name in Japanese is, Sadamovitch サダモビッチ.
Alright, I think that's enough Chou Nekketsu trivia for one day (I could go on and on but that amount is good enough... for now)
That Kumiko was actually a sukeban of her own school. In the Famicom Game Book (it's like a more involved chose your own adventure book) Nekketsu Kouha Kunio kun Bancho Rengo wo Buttobase! Kumiko is a major character and is the sukeban to a school called Meikou High School, clearly showing that Kumiko's uniform is from another school and not Taiyo (academy)'s. This only applies to that book, as in the main cannon Kumiko is a student of Taiyo.
Takeshi (the 17 year old motorcycle riding member of the Blue Emperor gang in Nekketsu Kouha Kunio kun) originally used to be a student of Nekketsu. This piece of trivia is in the book "Nekketsu Kouha Kunio kun Kanzen Hisshou Hon" its canonicity is debatable, however.
That Riki was in cahoots with the Sanwa Kai in Nekketsu Kouha Kunio kun (Famicom). It's even brought up in Nekketsu Monogatari EX's manual.
The naming convention of Shinji's gang was always the Blue Emperor. In the arcade Nekketsu Kouha, Shinji's gang is named the Yokohama Funky but when it came time for the Famicom version, Shinji's gang name changed to the Blue Emperor and the name stuck even in the Arc Sys era. As arcade cannon is totally separate from the console cannon, Banka's version of Shinji was still perfectly in character and his gang didn't change. The only time the name was contested was with Kunio no Nekketsu Toukyuu Densetsu, as that game was the third (and final) arcade Kunio kun game by Technos, it has its cast set as a sequel to the first two arcade Kunio kun games. So, Shinji's gang goes back to being called the Yokohama Funky, which is where all the confusion comes from.
That Bangai Rantou Hen despite being titled Nekketsu Kouha, has its settings in the Downtown series. The game takes place in Hanazono town and its neighbouring districts.
Murata Seiji made it high in a 2011 character popularity poll (he made 18th).
That Banka is an anomaly in the series. When Banka first came out, it was for all intents and purposes a stand-alone title that uses prior established lore but also has a ton of new settings in there as well. As Banka was supposed to have sequels, it would have been like Jidaigeki, a spin-off that uses similar things but is in its own existence. However, because Banka's sequels were never released, all of its events Became canon to the main series and fans have been trying to figure out how canon it is and where it is in the timeline.
That Nekketsu High School's idol Youko, was Kunio's (and Riki's) first kiss! Youko made her first and only appearance was in the Atlus-developed, Naxzat Soft-published, Nekketsu Kou Kou Dodgeball Bu PC Bangai Hen which was released a month and a few weeks before Soccer Hen's Famicom release. PC Bangai Hen is non-canon though.
That Saito (from Hakutaka) and Saito (from Numaoka) are brothers! Saito from Hakutaka is the older brother meanwhile Saito from Numaoka is the younger brother, in Nekketsu Monogatari (FC and EX) generic enemies/ jobbers/ thugs/ the students share the same faces from school to school to designate which type of stat they excel at, so the enemy that looks like Shin'ichi is a speed type enemy. The name for one of them and the fact that the designers chose that face is a reference to Saito Shin'ichi, but the brothers are not the same person.
That Takeuchi Shin'ya, Mitsuhiro (Yoshimitsu) Yoshida, Urabe and Mori were all at one point a hidden character representing the Technos team. Yoshida (based on the late great Mitsuhiro Yoshida) is a student at Houryou High School, in Nekketsu Monogatari (FC) he uses the high-health enemy type's face (the one that looks like Gen'ei), in Kunio kun no Dodgeball (SFC) Yoshida (named Yoshimitsu) appears as the captain of the Technos team and it's in this game he gets his face that would be used for all future appearances. As for the hair, in EX Yoshida (from Houryou) uses his Kunio kun no Dodgeball face, but his hair is styled after how he looked at the time (of EX's development). Mitsuhiro (from Nekketsu) and Yoshida are two totally separate characters in the lore.
Takeuchi (modelled after Takeuchi Shin'ya who worked at Technos) is a student of Hakutaka, in Nekketsu Koushinkyoku (GB) he is the captain of the Technos team and shares all of his stats with Kunio. In that game his face was already there, it just looks a little off if you're used to seeing him in his SFC sprite. In Kunio kun no Dodgeball (SFC), Takeuchi gets his more iconic sprite and is a member of the Japan representative team, he is joined along with fellow Hakutaka student Ishida. Takeuchi is such an underdog character and yet he somehow managed to appear in a live-action adaptation of the series (Rantou Enbu Hen).
Urabe and Mori both are members of the Technos team in Kunio kun no Dodgeball (SFC). Mori is a student of Senridai and his face in his debut game (Nekketsu Monogatari FC) has and still been his face. He is also a part of the gang Sonokawa formed in Senridai called the Senridai Bombers and has been one of the most re-occurring jobbers/zakos in the series. Urabe made his debut in Kunio kun no Dodgeball (SFC) and his school wasn't revealed until Parody Ban Special 2007 developer (one Oyama Kei), said that Urabe's school is Numaoka. Urabe is named after Technos Japan's sound effect guy, Urabe Taku.
Continuing on with trivia about lesser-known characters, did you know that the faces of the former leaders and right-hand men (second in command a vice leader etc.) of Hakutaka, Numaoka, Senridai, Sakajuku, Matagawa and Tanibana from X68000 Nekketsu Monogatari were used for the extra enemies in Nekketsu Monogatari EX. Sakaki's and Nakata's faces and hair were used for various enemies, Randou's face but not his hair was used, Mizunuma's face was used (his hair is similar to Godai's), Ikebe's and Ishizuka's faces were used (albeit with a few tweaks) Ishizuka's hair was also used, Nakaha's face and hair were used (the hair did go through a slight change) and last but not definitely least, Nanbu's hair was used for the zako enemies in EX (these guys only show up if you have the enemy count set to 20, as after the first 10 are gone, the next 10 will show up).
That Shodai and Toukyuu Densetsu cannot be re-released. For Shodai it's all the licenced imagery and the fact that one of the cops looks like a character from a famous manga. As for Toukyuu Den, it's D. Maou's final form and his stage, which are parodies of Shoko Asahara and his cult.
That in Ore wa Otoko da! Kunio kun, Kouji and Hiroshi were hoping that Kunio was going to die after getting hit by a vehicle. Kunio escapes from hell! and gets his soul back into his body, thus miraculously returning back to life. (keep in mind, this was just after he broke out of prison, not Juvie, P R I S O N)
That if Kobayashi were to defeat Yamada during the events of Nekketsu Monogatari, Kobayashi would leave Reihou and disappear without a trace. This is an actual ending you can get if you have Kobayashi in your gang in EX.
That Kinoshita was supposed to be in Jidaigeki. He was removed later in development and wouldn't get a Jidaigeki counterpart until Downtown Nekketsu Jidaigeki (3DS), Chuuemon is Chuukichirou (Maeda's JD counterpart)'s son. Early artwork of what Kinoshita could have looked like in Jidaigeki was seen in early design drafts for the flyer.
Misuzu's original voice was done by Technos founder and president Taki Kunio.
In Nekketsu Kouha Kunio kun Special, the game states that Riki has been in all of the games. Even though he wasn't in four titles during the Technos era.
That Riki during the events of Banka, could still go to Juvie as in Japan at the time being 19 was still technically being a youth in the eyes of the law.
That Xain from Xain'd Sleena was going to be a part of the audience in Nekketsu Kou Kou Dodgeball Bu (FC)'s vs mode stage in early screenshots. Xain wouldn't be forgotten, as his tales of defeating the evil galactic empire were all put into a book that you can buy in Nekketsu Monogatari (FC).
That Hanazono and Houryou were going to have fleshed-out story modes in Baseball Monogatari like Nekketsu's.
That Nekketsu Kou Kou Dodgeball Bu (in general, excluding Toukyuu Senshi no Maki (GB) and Kunio no Nekketsu Toukyuu Densetsu) is the 47th World Dodgeball Tournament. Kunio kun no Dodgeball (SFC) is the 48th and contrary to belief Chou Nekketsu Kou Kou Kunio kun Dodgeball Bu is the 49th World Dodgeball Tournament (as the Chou Nekketsu series doesn't re-introduce, retcon or replace the past events, from a game point of view I guess you could call them remakes but from a lore point of view nah).
That Ichirou appears at the ending of Ike Ike Nekketsu Hockey Bu.
And finally... Did you know...
That the entire Kunio kun series (outside of spin-offs like Jidaigeki, Mahou Monogatari and (I can't believe I'm even mentioning it) RCG (and all the other western localizations)) is not separate, in fact, quite the opposite, they're all connected. Koji Ogata said it himself on Twitter: https://twitter.com/food2han/status/1609749483801411584
To quote his post "I don't know who came out with terms such as (Nekketsu Kouha series) and (Downtown series). Actually (in fact), at the development center we did not divide the series by using such (generic or simple) terminology. I think it was started by some magazine"
This makes perfect sense, as the Downtown series's first game is a sequel to Nekketsu Kouha Kunio kun. And if Banka was to happen before Nekketsu Monogatari Riki would be a very different person (in comparison to how he is (especially towards Kunio) in Banka).
So, the Next time I post, it will be about the Kunio kun series timeline! Because, oh boy! I've got a lot of stuff to explain. After I have shared the timeline, I will break it down game by game, story by story so that it's clear as to why the events happen in such an order (it might get a little deep too).
I'll see you all again!
Hey! Here's something that I thought I would share. It's a bunch of screenshots from various sources (I'll point out which ones are "mine") of the prototype/ pre-release versions of Koushinkyoku and Nekketsu Monogatari.
This screenshot is one of the earliest images of Nekketsu Monogatari known on Earth. This was after the initial revision where the game was more of a direct sequel to Nekketsu Kouha Kunio kun (albeit, using the 2.5 head height/ Nekketsu Kou Kou Dodgeball Bu designs). At this (the image's) point in time, the game was starting to look and feel more like the Nekketsu Monogatari we all know and love today!
Yes, bosses were supposed to have their health displayed as well (a feature that wouldn't be in another Technos beat'em up until Shodai Nekketsu Kouha Kunio kun)!
Hanazono 3rd Park looks very different with this pool here. You probably might have been able to fight in the water much like Jidaigeki!
This was slightly later in development and as you can see the name entry screen had a few more characters (heart and numbers). I miss Technos Japan...
At this stage in development, you were able to decide what stats you wanted at the start of the game rather than with every stat being at 15 and health being at 63.
Originally all the store clerks were going to have portraits! Not only that but also the fact that enemies were (possibly) supposed to appear in shopping districts, another feature from this game that was eventually added to Jidaigeki (funnily enough, there is a game genie code for River City Ransom to enable enemies to appear in the shopping districts!). Last things to note, it seems that you were going to fight Nishimura at Hanazono West 2 (Ni) Choume rather than Sawaguchi and you threw tires horizontally instead of throwing them vertically (perhaps the tires weren't meant to roll initially).
It's wild just thinking about the number of features this game was going to have that were eventually inserted into other Kunio kun games (especially Shodai, Nekketsu Monogatari EX and Jidaigeki). This is also the last image from my personal collection, all the images were from a special DVD from Tokuma Shoten Intermedia's special issue of Famicom magazine covering the Famicom Mini (2017). I just cropped the images in MS Paint and edited out the text from the magazine to give some clear screenshots (well, as clear as photos from 1988 could be).
I don't remember the source of this image, but the moment I refind the source I will credit it. Anyway, this image shows Kunio being awkward around cute girls (a setting which wouldn't be seen again until the ARC System Works era). Not only that, but the game seems to of had more cut scenes (I'm pretty sure that's Mami and Hasebe in the image, so perhaps Mami wasn't immediately kidnapped)! Another cutscene was the iconic intro played out in real time rather than as text (however there were some let's just say... slight differences), unfortunately, I don't have that image on hand but just look for the original flyer it's on there.
Much like the image above, I don't remember the source but if I refind it, I'll credit it. Oh look, enemies going into a rolling state after a powerful attack just like Jidaigeki and also, there were going to be multiple coins after an enemy was defeated, this feature would also be inserted into Jidaigeki (except in that game it was reserved for when bosses were defeated). Kunio and Riki were also going to have portraits as well (as seen in this screenshot of the status screen). These portraits however, did not go entirely unused, they were eventually used as an easter egg in River City Ransom (if you try it in Street Gangs however... the portraits will not be displayed correctly as these graphics were written over with the new title screen graphics)!
And that's all for Nekketsu Monogatari's prototype/ pre-release screenshots. So, as you could tell from the screenshots, a lot had changed from this version seen in late '88 to the final version but why? Now this is speculation on my half, but it seems that Sekimoto and Yoshida wanted the game to be more accessible to a wider audience and so opted out of the more complicated mechanics and with the story being more finalized, maybe there was less of a reason to include the cutscenes? Also perhaps, code optimization (i.e performance, slowdown etc.) was another issue and the more complex interactions, versions of areas and damage values being displayed was all too much for the hardware at the time? I'm not too entirely sure, but, what I am sure of is that the game we got, in the end, was absolutely a masterpiece! And a great start to the Downtown series.
Here's a fun fact: Did you know that during development, the bosses were going to have win quotes when they beat you? From trash-talking to thinking about siblings every boss had something unique to say and that gave the players the opportunity to see more of these characters such as Gouda's reason for protecting the gates of Reiho Academy (which was left as a mystery in the final game).
Just as an extra, here are some pages of the Sharp X68000 version's manual
Here's some very early artwork of Hattori Ryuichi doing Ryuubi Ranpuukyaku (although at the time it was just called Senpuukyaku as the name wasn't coined until the Famicom release of Double Dragon 2 The Revenge).
This Mami art is also featured on the spine of the Sharp X68000 version's case/ box. It was also used as a sticker! The full-colour version has her wear Reiho's uniform just like the box art. These were from the internet archive. Here's a link: https://archive.org/details/rivercityransom/mode/2up
Next up, we have Nekketsu Monogatari's sequel! Koushinkyoku!
This one will be a lot shorter
No major differences so far, just Todo's dialogue is different and a lot more shorter. It also helps that the settings of the Downtown series were already in place, so now the direction is a lot more straightforward.
Here's the program/ event select screen... wait! What!? Hasebe was pulling double duty? (Koushinkyoku AS would do this too) Also, Tama wari Game is just called Tama wari (or Ball break). Lastly, just some more dialogue differences.
Aside from the dialogue differences and the coloured text, the biggest change here is that you didn't get fixed points based on your position when you crossed the finish line (speculation).
Whoa, hold up! The HUD is looking a bit different, I think that was there to show which team was on which player slot/ controller port (it could also be an early version of the points display). That and the fact that the uniform pallets haven't quite been finalized...
Another thing to note, is that the health bars were slightly more thicker in comparison to the final version.
More of the previous screen is shown on this screen, also (speculation), Cross country might have had screens that scrolled more than being broken up into segments.
All of the gulping air face sprites have not been implemented yet (hence why Ryuichi is using Kunio's face as a placeholder) and the characters would have had an underwater pallet.
Oh, they're in their correct uniform colours (this was taken from the same source).
Now, these screenshots are very different! Firstly, Tama wari's background is a lot more complex and it even has a hit counter! This background reminds me of a background from Bikkuri. And there are those background girls that you can't see in the final on the Battle Royalle event. Now to address the biggest change, yes the characters are wearing coloured vests rather than black ones. This actually matches up with the artwork and CM, but I can understand the change as it keeps visual consistency between all the events.
And that's it for Koushinkyoku, other than character dialogue, visual consistency, some background changes and certain rule changes, Koushinkyoku's design was very consistent during development!
All of the Koushinkyoku images were from the same source as the Nekketsu Monogatari prototype/ pre-release screenshots (that I "have") with my editing to crop out any of the magazine blurbs to get a clearer screenshot.
Hey, I guess you guys could use these for the games pages on this wiki!
So, bye for now!
Hey, I'm not a familiar face around these parts at all though I figured I'd let it be known somewhere else that I've been working on scanning & archiving some of the old Kunio mangas that I've been able to get my hands on.
I've posted some of my progress in a couple Discord servers but currently I'm working on piecing together the 2nd entry of Kunio-kun! Nekketsu Game!
I finished scanning the book a few weeks ago though I'm currently just fixing any noticeable rotation and any junk left behind by my scanner as I wasn't interested in tearing the pages apart.
When I'm finished I plan on dumping it somewhere online, though I'm unsure if I'll go out of my way to attempt to get this translated on my own. Just the other day I was actually able to find a listing for the baseball book and should hopefully have that arrive at my door a couple weeks from now!
I also picked up the second edition of the Kunio-kun 4koma book though I haven't actually gotten started on scanning anything from it apart from the cover to test out colour
