You'll get different answers from anyone you ask, though most often I see people point towards some characters that appeared in River City Girls. I personally don't care whether the RCG games drastically change a character's personality or anythin' as those games are apart of a spinoff series that aren't directly tied in with any existing canon.
If I had to pick somebody tho then I think it'd be Godai. I prefer how he's been portrayed by Arc over his creepier self in RCG.
Not really any moments in-game minus Downtown SMASH Dodgeball where she wishes for Goda's team to win in the game's opening. This bit for the most part just comes from her description in baseball and later her bio in Super Sports Challenge ~All Stars Special~.
This isn't mentioned in any of Goda's bios and the two never actually have a point in any game where they're seen together.
While these aren't all manga, a few more books I wanted to work with arrived today, so here's what's now on my eventual to-do list:
Shodai Manual
Nekketsu Koha Kunio-kun FC Guide Book
4Koma Vol 3
VJump Magazine
SNES Dodgeball Guide Book
I actually finished scanning all of Shodai's manual shortly after it arrived and cropped half of it's pages, so I should have that up n' available likely by tomorrow! Condition was a bit rough so it's not the best in the world, but perfectly viewable. Mostly wanted to get all the artwork from that since I couldn't really find it anywhere online.
The NKK guide book sounds like it'll be pretty easy as well given that it's mostly text with it's realllly cool illustrations spread out, so I may work on that before continuing 4Koma Vol 3. It came in a great condition! I did end up scanning the first segment of 4Koma, though had it on pause cause I felt like updating information on the wiki and also just to continue my own game dev work.
Vol 2 is now complete and can be viewed in full here: https://archive.org/details/nekketsu-koha-kunio-kun-4koma-manga-kingdom-vol-2
I don't got much else to add from my previous update, so I'll leave it at that!
An update on Vol 2 of the 4Koma book, that is now near completion as I've only got ~18 pages left to edit. I took a break from the book stuff for a couple of weeks though have since resumed a few days ago
When it's done I'll be linking it here and on it's wiki page like always, though I'll also put up a blog post for all the scans I've completed so far as I only found out recently that's something regular users can do. Some extra news, but I've now also gotten my hands on Vol 3 of the 4Koma books and the VJump magazine which I plan on starting when Vol 2 is complete! Condition came in great so there hopefully shouldn't be many problems, though the VJump one may be a bit harder as it's completely in colour.
Sweet, that's just what I wanted to know then. I'll be sure to pick up a copy sometime as it sounds like it'll be worth archiving online
I always learn some new niche history from every post of yours, so it's never a problem! Out of the 3 mangas I've seen I think the two sports ones were definitely my favourite. They all got such a cool look and stylish interpretation of the game's source material
As for the 3rd volume of the 4Koma books, I did end up purchasing it when I saw it though as I mentioned in my update post, I've got my fingers crossed that the condition is still scannable and not unreadable. I'll be on the prowl for the 1st volume too so I can eventually just have all 3 completed.
One thing I did want to ask you that I did recognize off an older blog post made here, what actually is this book about and was it official or endorsed by Technos? I got the feeling it's a guide book of sort, though I was interested in the art inside and may pick this one up as well. Quite a few listings exist for it with various prices so it's not too hard of a find.
All I really know about it is that it's a V Jump issue which was some magazine related to various media
Progress has been made on the second 4Koma book! I've finished scanning all the pages today and now just need to get to editing which I'm still pretty sure it won't be too difficult of a task cause the pages aren't extended to the edges of the page and is much shorter in comparison to the sports manga series.
Hoping I can have the whole thing ready within the next couple of weeks?
I also found a listing for the 3rd volume of the 4Koma books, so if I end up getting that one in my hands then I'll be sure to start scanning that one as well. May be a little dicey with it's condition tho it came at a pretty cheap price so I was willing to take a gamble on it's quality.
Finished up with the baseball manga and it's now available on the Internet Archive! It can be viewed here: https://archive.org/details/kunio-kun-nekketsu-battle-1/mode/2up
That concludes 2/3 of the books I own, so next up when I've got the time it'll be onto the second 4Koma book!
That one existing fan translation for volume 1 I thought was serviceable and able to be followed through for the most part. I may take a peek at some of the other volumes though my understanding is gonna be pretty limited since I can't actually read the language
For another update on the baseball manga, I've made good progress since my last post! I finished editing chapter 2 and moved onto cropping all of chapter 3 to hand off to my friend who helped with editing on the basketball manga. While they've been working on that, I went on and finished editing all of chapter 4 which means I've now got the final chapter left before I'm pretty much done!
There's about 27 pages left for me to do till I gotta go over the entire thing n' make sure no pages were missed. When that's all done, I'll put up another post here linking everything just like last time. I still got the 2nd volume of the 4koma books that I'm interested in putting up, so hopefully when I get around to that there won't be too many hurdles since that's just a collection of comic strips
Thought I'd throw this here, but the more commonly known Kunio manga series is now being officially re-distributed digitally: https://twitter.com/Kunio_Kun_PR/status/1634081929275543552?s=20
To my knowledge this one is already archived and even has an English fan translation for at least one of them. It'd be pretty rad if the other lesser known mangas eventually got an official digital release, cause there's quite a bit that don't have any sorta online archive including the ones that I've bought for myself.
An update on my own archive of the Baseball manga, I've slowly been progressing whenever I had the time and currently have 49/163 pages done. I'm gonna finish editing chapter 2 and then get the help of one of my friends to fix up colours on pages with me
That'd honestly be awesome cause from what I've seen, you have real extensive knowledge on obscure details that haven't been documented anywhere on the wiki and probably just online overall. If I had to make any requests, the game pages that have no available official or fan translation could really use some more information.
I finished up my scans so now it's gonna be onto editing for the next lil' while. Here's three more pages I thought looked sick as hell
Thanks a ton! I'd reallllly appreciate if the plot section for the baseball game's page got filled in cause it's one of the few games I'm still almost totally in the dark about since it's never gotten any English fan translation. I was able to follow through the basketball manga well cause I've already beaten the game, but this one I don't know anything about other then it's general premise.
I picked up that Sugata is the lead protagonist where he leads Nekketsu's baseball team all the way up until Reiho where Kunio finally tags along and the part where Rika is sick in the hospital throughout the story.
Shoulda mentioned I recognized Lance here cause he was the secondary guy playing on Las Vegas' team in the basketball manga, but I never knew his name till ya said it. I'll be sure to share some more cool pages n' whatnot here when I finish scanning everything
I've gotten around to continuing the baseball book, so now I'm on chapter 4/5 for scanning these. I'll probably get those all done today and then spend a while on tuning up any pages that need it.
Here's the table of contents cause I thought it was really cute lol
I'd appreciate if somebody with more knowledge about the baseball game could let me know who some of the characters, cause from the left to right I only recognize Kunio, Hasebe, Sugata, Monozono, Todo, Ryuichi, Ryuji, Mami, Riki, Sonokawa, Goda, and Godai. I know the one to the left of Momozono is the sick girl in this game and the one to the left of Sugata is their boyfriend(?)
Really hoping I can get that baseball one in alright shape. As cool as they look in comics, pages that extend to the edges are a nightmare cause they'll always have some detail cut off with my own method. There's like so much more in the baseball book so I'm hoping by the time I'm done scanning it all not too much is gonna get lost.
If you insist trying to get your hands on any of the books physically, I suggest keeping tabs on Yahoo auctions as that's where I got mine (via a proxy site). They're like damn expensive tho on-top of shipping fees
Apologies for such a long time in-between updates, but I've gotten around to finishing the basketball book after taking a couple weeks off from this!
If you wish to view it, I uploaded it as a .cbz onto the Internet Archive, though alternatively I also made it available as a PDF. If anyone downloads the PDF version, the layout order will be left - right rather than the other way around as I more-so included it for anyone who may prefer reading in a single page view.

I didn't finish scanning the baseball book, though I'll be continuing it overtime on the side whenever I've got time to do so. Thanks to two good friends of mine for helping restore details on a couple of pages (superiorMARI & slucklord on Twitter)!
I've got a bit of an update! I've finished fixing some of my scans and all the pages are pretty much done, though I have a few panels being edited by a friend to restore a line or two that may have gotten cut off from the scan. I should probably have the basketball book uploaded to the Internet Archive (and alternatively just as a PDF) sometime this week. I'll post a link here and just on the wiki page's comment section for anyone interested!
Just today I've received my order for the baseball book at my door so I plan on starting to scan this sometime soon, although it may be a bit more tough as the condition doesn't seem to be as good as the basketball one is, though should hopefully be doable.
I skimmed through the book already and just test ran a few pages with okay results. My scanner seems to have a bit more trouble picking up black for this book so things come out looking a bit more grainy, tho I did wanna share these two pages anyways cause they went hard
I gotta rescan this one when I eventually get to this point in the book but like damnnnn
I'm from Canada so I don't have access to Yahoo auctions either, I just bought it using Zenmarket. I'm impressed with that collection you've amassed! I'm not much of a physicals guy so my interest in collecting is most likely gonna stick to digitalizing things I thought were cool but couldn't get a shred of information on (like the books I'm doin' right now)
Thanks again for the insight on Kunio no Oden by the way, that wouldn't be a bad idea to have that plot information edited into the wiki page here for anyone that might just be cruising around. I first got into the franchise right after playing the Shantae series when I picked up River City Girls on a sale and then would go to watch a video covering all the references in that game. That lead me to check out the older titles to the point where I've played a good chunk of them with the only ones I haven't really touched being games that haven't released in English or received a fan translation.
When I'm finished scanning the books I got and I upload them somewhere online you and anyone else who might be interested are totally free to do whatever you'd like with them! Best of luck with the site dude ✌️
Yeah I figured any of the stories in these books weren't to interpreted as their own canon which is a bit of a shame in some regards since I thought characters like Johnny's sister were pretty cool
That's interesting about Kunio no Oden actually having a story tho. From what I've seen and the bits I've played it kinda felt like one of those oddball releases on the surface with no real connection or plot tying anything together. Is that plot from a manual or something?
Since you mentioned it I'm taking a bit of a wild guess the last chapter of the basketball book is supposed to be based off Kunio no Oden? This happens after they win the basketball tournament and fly back home from the US which is where most of the other characters from the series show up.
Lowkey have been a bit curious what the hell Hasebe even said here cause Kunio looks like he was caught totally off guard lol
There's quite a few books here that you've mentioned that I was actually totally unaware about too! I've seen some of your posts when I started digging for any upload of these till I eventually just bit the bullet and ordered what I could find on Yahoo auctions.
